Dec 18, Polonnaruwa: Sri Lanka Wildlife Department officials have arrested eight persons who laid traps of food crops laden with hidden explosives to kill animals.
The officials have arrested the suspects from Somawathi area of Polonnaruwa district in the eastern part of the country. The suspects have laid home made bombs inside food crops to kill the animals eating their crops.
The improvised device called Hakka Patas in Sinhala language meaning jaw exploder has been used to kill number of animals including elephants in this area.
Wildlife Department said the suspects were to be produced in Hingurakgoda court today.
Animal lovers and the environmentalists in the country have severely condemned the inhumane and illegal method of killing wild animals and demand an end to the practice.
