Dec 08, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government today said that the LTTE terrorists had executed Sri Lankan security forces personnel imprisoned by them during the final stages of the war last year.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne told parliament that several hardcore LTTE cadres who were arrested from the Vavuniya welfare camps had revealed that 60 soldiers who were in LTTE custody were executed by them during the finals stages of the war.
Jayaratne made this statement during the committee stage debate on the Defence Ministry today.
Despite the peace time in the country the government has allocated highest budgetary amount for the year 2011 to the defence sector.
The Tigers had shot the soldiers and then burnt their bodies, the Prime Minister said.
Jayaratne added that the mass graves of the soldiers that have been found proved that the LTTE executed prisoners of war.
The authorities on information received from the arrested LTTE cadres recently unearthed a mass grave in Kilinochchi where the bodies of 26 Sri Lankan soldiers executed by the LTTE believed to have been buried.
According to four LTTE suspects who were allegedly involved in the killing and are in custody now, the soldiers had been imprisoned and tortured for more than three years before they were executed and burnt when the security forces were approaching.
