Sept 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Economic Development Ministry has said that it has recorded a nearly 36% increase in tourist arrivals in the month of August this year in comparison to the same period in 2009.
Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has said that this is an achievement given the lower tourist arrivals usually predicted for August.
The Deputy Minister has said that the 'World Tourism Day' events organized by the Sri Lanka Tourist Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) showcasing the necessity of protecting the environment to prosper in tourism are to take place in Kirala Kele from September 24 - 27.
Abeywardena has said that it was due to this reason that the country has named 2010 as the year of 'Tourism and Biodiversity'.
"Internationally people have realized it. With the economic development in the country, nature tends to get neglected, but we are going beyond that," he has said.
