Sept 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has decided to write to Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to nominate another name to the Parliamentary Council since the person nominated by the latter has refused to accept the nomination.
Rajapaksa has said that he would forward the names of the Prime Minister's and the Opposition Leader's nominees to the Council to President Mahinda Rajapaksa next week soon after the Opposition Leader nominates a new name.
Rajapaksa has been quoted in the local media saying that he had received the name of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne's nominee and that of Opposition Leader Wickremasinghe.
The Opposition Leader nominated the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M.A. Sumanthiran who refused to accept the nomination, saying the party opposed the 18th Amendment.
The Speaker, Prime Minister, and the Opposition Leader are to serve as ex-officio members of the five- member Parliamentary Council.
