* Sri Lanka Navy records 49 incidents involving illegal fishing since January 2010

Sept 05, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy has said that there had been a total of 49 incidents involving illegal fishing since January this year, with 234 offenders being arrested by the Navy.

Navy Spokesperson Captain Athula Senarath has told the media that there have been incidents involving the use of illegal fishing nets, as well as other methods, such as the use of gelignite explosives.

According to Navy statistics, most number of incidents had taken place in Kalpitiya, Puttalam, and areas North of Trincomalee.

Captain Senarath has said that those arrested have been subsequently reported to either the police or the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
