Sept 03, Colombo: While the rice farmers of Sri Lanka still complain over the low demand for their bountiful harvest in Yala season, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade says that measures are underway to purchase the harvest of the maize farmers.
The Cooperative Wholesale Establishment will purchase maize and resell them to Prima Company that acts as a close monopoly in the industry of animal food production.
Prima Company has also planned to purchase 60,000 metric tons of maize, sources said. Two more private companies are also to engage in purchasing of maize.
The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade says that the plans are underway to purchase the upcoming soya harvest as well. The stocks are to be resold to the Ministry of Health for the production of nutritious food for children and pregnant mothers.
