Oct 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka National Child Protection Authority has commenced a probe against Colombo International School (CIS), a famous private school, regarding the introduction of a booklet named 'Introducing Moral Issues' by Joe Jenkins to Grade Six students.
The introduction of the book containing chapters on Making Love, Contraception, and Abortion to 12-year olds has outraged the parents making them to ask the principal to remove the book from the curriculum. The parents have complained to the National Child Protection Authority as the plea was unheeded by the principal.
The Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority Anoma Dissanayake says a probe is underway.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena has told the state-owned Sinhala daily The Dinamina today that legal action would be taken against those instigating misleading ideas among school children.
Meanwhile, the principal of the school M.J. Chappell has told the Sunday Times that the booklet had been in the syllabus since 1997 without complaints from any quarters and it will be staying.
