Oct 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya is looking at the possibility of amalgamating the People's Movement for Democracy headed by Anoma Fonseka and the People's Movement Against Dictatorial Insanity initiated by the UNP.
The local media reports state that following many comments over the inability of the two movements to reach common ground despite fighting for the same cause, the UNP has decided to explore the possibility the of joining forces.
Jayasuriya had reportedly suggested to Mrs. Fonseka joining the two movements before the 'Black Protest' organized by the People's Movement for Democracy last Sunday (10).
Anoma had said that she was willing to discuss the proposal along with other members of the Movement. Jayasuriya had said that he too would make the proposal to UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe before getting back to her.
When informed about the proposal DNA members have said the Alliance was willing to discuss Jayasuriya's suggestion.
The Marxist JVP, which is a key coalition partner of the DNA, however has cautioned Anoma of the need to continue the People's Movement for Democracy and build it further.
A DNA MP has said the UNP after remaining silent for months, finally formed the People's Movement Against Dictatorial Insanity after the People's Movement for Democracy was launched and several protests were also held by it.
"The UNP wants to discuss, so we are willing to discuss," he has said.
The two parties joined forces to field the jailed DNA leader Sarath Fonseka as the common opposition candidate for this year's presidential elections against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
