Oct 14, New Delhi: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived today at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi to attend as a Guest of honor at the closing ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games.
Parliamentarian Sajin De Vas Gunawardena, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Sri Lanka High Commissioner to India Prasad Kariyawasam accompanied the President.
The President of Sri Lanka is the main head of state representing the Asian region except the leader of the host country, India at this ceremony.
Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, President of the Indian Congress Party Sonia Gandhi and Prince Edward of Britain are also scheduled to participate in the closing ceremony that will be held this evening.
President Rajapaksa is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with the Indian Prime Minister, Senior Indian government Ministers S.M. Krishna, P. Chidambaram, Sri Ananda Sharma and Sri Violar Ravi during his brief stay in India.
Nearly 5,000 men and women from 72 countries participated in the commonwealth games.
