July 30, Colombo: A recent survey has found that the loss to Sri Lanka economy due to traffic congestions in Colombo city is Rs. 32 billion per year.
It is 2% of the value of entire economic activities in Colombo city. The loss to the economy includes fuel wastage and loss of labor. Air pollution is another effect of traffic congestion.
These facts were revealed by a research conducted by a team led by the senior professor of Moratuwa University Amal Kumarage.
Prof. Kumarage has pointed out that the steps such as building flyovers etc. are insufficient to overcome the problem of traffic congestion. He highlighted that the public transport systems are needed to be improved to fight traffic on roads.
