July 29, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court has released the former head of the Presidential Security Division (PSD), DIG Nihal Karunaratne on bail.
Colombo High Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena released Karunaratne on bail yesterday (28). Karunaratne has been sentenced to four years in prison and fined Rs. 10,000 for allegedly threatening the OIC of Hanguranketa Police H. M. Gunaratne.
Karunaratne was the head of the PSD during the tenure of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and was accused of threatening the Hanguranketha OIC during an election rally in 2001.
Following an appeal by DIG Karunaratne against the decision, the Colombo High Court released Karunaratne on a cash bail of Rs. 200,000 and two surety bails of Rs. 200,000 each.
