July 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) today (29) filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) on the death of a third year student of the Ruhuna University and the arrest of eight other students this week.
IUSF convener Udul Premaratne said the complaint was lodged as part of the Federation's ongoing campaign calling for an impartial inquiry into the death of Ruhuna University student Aruna Susantha Bandara.
The IUSF claims Bandara's death was caused by the severe injuries he received during an assault by police personnel on Ruhuna University students on June 18.
The police however claimed that the death was due to natural causes, but later said that another university student was responsible for the death.
Meanwhile, the police arrested eight university students early in the week while pasting posters blaming the police for Bandara's death.
