July 29, Jaffna: The body of a midwife who died under mysterious circumstances in the North earlier this month was exhumed yesterday for a fresh forensic examination.
Darshika Saravanan, 27, a midwife at Velanai hospital was found dead in her room in the official quarters on July 11. A doctor in the same hospital was arrested for her murder and later released on bail by the Jaffna High Court.
However, the Kayts magistrate K Wasanthanesan acting on a petition filed to court by Darshika's mother has ordered the exhumation of the body on July 28 and called for the submission of a fresh report from the Judicial Medical Officer on the death to court.
Darshika's mother filed the petition on July 19 seeking exhumation and fresh medical examination of her daughter's remains on the suspicion that her daughter was sexually abused before her murder.
The exhumed remains have been sent to the Colombo Judicial Medial officer for a new examination.
