July 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) is to hold a protest march to the Police Headquarters today.

IUSF Convener Udul Premaratne told ColomboPage that the protest march is to commence from the Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo 7 and proceed towards the Police Headquarters in Colombo 1 around noon today.

He said that once the protestors reach the Police Headquarters, they would be engaged in a sathyagraha outside the office on the road.

However, Premaratne said students trying to participate in the protest from the outstations have been prevented from arriving in Colombo.

"So far authorities have prevented students from Peradeniya, Ruhuna, and Sabaragamuwa from leaving the universities by not allowing buses to leave the premises," he said.

Nevertheless, Premartane said, they would find alternate means to get the students to participate in the protest and that it would go ahead as planned regardless of the obstacles.

The demonstrators are protesting against the police for arresting six students while they were putting up posters calling for the arrest of police officials allegedly involved in the death of Ruhunu University student Susantha Aruna Bandara. Police say a student affiliated with the union assaulted the victim resulting in his death.
