July 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Jaffna District Parliamentarian Vijayakala Maheswaran, the widow of slain UNP parliamentarian T. Maheswaran, today called on the government to launch an investigation into the attack on Tamil inmates at the Colombo remand prison.

The attack of the Tamil prisoners had allegedly taken place on Saturday (24).

The MP issuing a statement said the attack had taken place when Tamil remand prisoners complained to prison officials that they were being kept in overcrowded cells.

She has stated that a remand prisoner who sustained injuries in the attack is receiving treatment at the prison hospital.

Maheswaran has called on the government to probe into the attack and take measures to ensure the safety of Tamil prisoners.
