July 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police have arrested six university students while they were putting up posters calling for the arrest of police officials involved in the death of Ruhunu University student Susantha Aruna Bandara.
Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convener Udul Premaratne said these students were arrested last night in Nugegoda, a suburb of Colombo while they were putting up posters and are currently in remand custody.
Two Sri Jayewardenepura University students arrested by the Kirulapone police and four students of the Indigenous Medical Faculty of the Colombo University arrested by the Welikada police are being detained.
Premaratne observed that the police had also removed cut outs placed at the Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, and the Indigenous Medical Faculty of the Colombo University.
He added that the IUSF will file a case at the Supreme Court within this week against the violation of freedom of expression.
The Marxist party affiliated student union says an assault by the police led to the death of the student while the police say an assault by another university student attached to the Marxist party fatally assaulted the victim.
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered a full probe on the incident.
