July 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Power and Energy announced that they plan to import coal from Indonesia and Australia.
Sri Lanka imports coal to use for power generation. Sri Lanka's first coal power plant is to commence power generation from September this year.
The present annual need of coal in Sri Lanka is 650,000 metric tons.
The Norochcholai coal power plant situated in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka will generate 300 megawatt at the first phase. The capacity of the plant is to be doubled soon.
Sri Lanka has signed agreements with the Indian Thermal Power Corporation to set up the second coal power plant in Sampur in the Trincomalee district.
