The special police unit investigating archaeological vandalism in Sri Lanka has recorded 516 such incidents since 2008.
Police say that the fines imposed on the offenders are Rs. 5.6 million.
The unit was established in 2008 by the Police Department to protect the cultural heritage of the country from treasure hunters. It is linked to the Department of Archeology and coordinated throughout the island by police divisions.
