Aug 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Attorney General has today (27) indicted a Buddhist monk and four others before the Colombo High Court for committing offences under the Emergency Regulations and Offensive Weapons Act.

The Attorney General has complained that the Ven. Uvatenna Sumana Thero had retained 50 hand grenades, two T56 assault rifles and 210 live bullets in his possession violating the Emergency Regulations and Offensive Weapons Act.

The Thero has been charged on nine counts under the Emergency Regulations and eight counts under the Offensive Weapons Act.

Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundera has issued summons on the suspects to appear in court on August 30 when the case is to be heard.

Sri Lanka's elite Special Task Force (STF) in January this year arrested the Buddhist monk, who was a strong supporter of the common opposition presidential candidate General (retired) Sarath Fonseka, for storing weapons inside the Bodhirukkaramaya Temple at Maligawatta, in capital Colombo.
