Aug 21, Colombo: The International Cricket Council today ruled that Sri Lanka's cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara is not guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the rained-out 4th ODI against New Zealand in Dambulla on Friday.
The match referee Alan Hurst charged Sangakkara with a Level 2 offence, for "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play" after Sangakkara bumped into New Zealand bowler Nathan McCullum in the 26.5 over.
The incident happened when Sangakkara tried to ground his bat to take his run after flicking a ball to fine-leg region. While turning for the second run, Sangakkara collided with McCullum who had his back towards the batsman.
"I looked at video footage of the incident from various angles and considered the detailed evidence of the umpires," the match referee Alan Hurst said in an ICC statement.
"I found that video evidence that was put forward by the player provided reasonable doubt as to whether the contact was deliberate," he noted.
The match was abandoned due to heavy rain with Sri Lanka at 203 for 3 in 40.3 Overs. Both teams shared the points of the match.
