Aug 21, Colombo: Sri Lankan authorities have received over 100 complaints regarding various alleged corruption and malpractices taking place in the 48 local government bodies in the Western Province, Local Government Services Commissioner H. Sumanapala has said.
Accordingly, out of all the local government bodies, the highest numbers of complaints have been against Maharagama, Kalutara, Divulapitiya and Peliyagoda.
Interestingly, complaints have been made by members of the ruling party in addition to those from the general public.
Sumanapala has said that the allegations leveled against local government members were corruption, irregularities, financial frauds, violation of tender procedures, arbitrary recruitments, bribery, and administrative bulldozing.
The Local Government Investigations Director is to now initiate investigations into these complaints.
According to Sumanapala, investigations into some local government bodies have already been completed and action had been taken against the Colombo Municipal Council and Panadura Municipality.
