Aug 21, Kandy: Sri Lankan prison officials fatally shot a prisoner who attempted to escape from the maximum security Bogambara Prison in Kandy this morning.

According to the police, another prisoner who attempted to flee was apprehended by Prison officers.

Prisons Commissioner Major General V. R De Silva told the local media that the inmates had tried to scale the boundary wall after getting through the roof on the prison's second floor.

Prison officials had warned the two inmates, but had been forced to open fire at them as they had not heeded warning shots.

The Commissioner has said the prisoner who had been killed was a former army deserter.
