Aug 19, Colombo: The three-member Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) disciplinary committee appointed to probe the charges against former Deputy Minister of Highways Mervyn Silva will meet tomorrow for the first time, SLFP sources say.

The Deputy Minister was sacked by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently following his ill-famed act of tying a public official to a tree at a Divisional Secretariat in Gampaha district for failing to attend a dengue prevention programme.

Wide-spread agitations erupted against his action and the SLFP suspended his membership and appointed a committee to probe allegations.

However, the Minister was lucky to enjoy impunity so far despite that his action amounted to breach of penal code. Some senior police officers were also present at the scene of crime.

The SLFP disciplinary committee, headed by President's Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe, comprises attorneys-at-law Mahinda Samarasekara as Secretary and M. Sahid.

Meanwhile, a group of Buddhist monks are demanding the government to reinstate MP Silva in his former position. The monks are to hold a convention at the BMICH tomorrow (20) to make their demand.
