According to him, there are only 93 schools to accommodate students qualified to study for G.C.E. (Advanced Level) in English medium. Therefore, many students that passed G.CE. (Ordinary Level) from 601 schools that had English sections are facing utmost difficulties in finding a school for Advanced Level study.

There is a severe shortage of teachers to teach subjects such as science and mathematics in English medium in many schools. Especially, the qualified persons lack enthusiasm in joining teaching profession due to poor condition in profession, the Ceylon Teachers' Union pointed out.

Of the 93 schools that accommodate students in English medium, 29 are situated in the Western Province, pointed out the Chairman of the Ceylon Teachers' Union.

He said that the Education Ministry published an advertisement only on May 12 to recruit 554 teachers to teach AL students in the English medium. He said that some of the students would have to revert to Sinhala medium since the Education Ministry officials lacked proper planning ahead of the crisis.
