May 30, Colombo: Two school-age boys have drowned in a canal in Udawalawa in the deep south of Sri Lanka trying to retrieve a kite that fell in the canal, the police said.
One of the boys had been rescued and admitted to the hospital. He is in serious condition, hospital sources said.
Police said the two victims and another friend were flying kites near the canal when one of them fell in the canal.
Police believe that one child fell into the canal and washed away when he tried to retrieve the kite from the canal. The body of the boy was later recovered two kilometers away from the place he fell.
The child has been identified as Irosh Udara, 15, a student of Udawalawa School.
The other boy is believed to have jumped into the canal to save his friend.
