Sri Lanka to introduce new education act 
May 29, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is preparing to introduce a new national education policy to revamp the country's education system before the end of the year, Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said.
Addressing a ceremony today in Colombo to offer teaching appointments to 254 graduates Minister Gunawardena said the new policy will be introduced as an Education Act that will not be frequently changed by different governments coming into power. A special advisory committee will be appointed to draw the national education policy, he said. Speaking of the country' teachers, the Minister said national education system will be upgraded under the Mahinda Chinthana Policy manifesto and measures will be taken to streamline teacher transferring policy in the country. Minister Gunawardena revealed plans to set up a pool of teaching professionals comprising retired principals, teachers, and retired intellectuals of state and banking sectors. Their honorary service will be utilized to conduct English medium teaching in A-level classes in government school, the Minister indicated. The Ministry of Education will also help to enhance the students' Sinhala grammar knowledge. These teachers will provide their service especially to the schools that lack experienced teachers. Meanwhile, 554 English medium graduates will also be given teaching appointments soon, the Minister said.
