May 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Southern Province Council Chief Minister has suspended the membership of former chairman of the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna led Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha H.L. Jayasiri.
Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal Silva earlier suspended Jayasiri from his office as Chairman, and placed his local Council under the purview of a special commissioner.
Jayasiri then continued as a member of the JVP controlled local government body.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that the Chief Minister had suspended Jayasiri's membership in a gazette notification issued on May 19.
"The Chief Minister appears to have overstepped his boundaries. We will take legal action against him." Silva said vowing to take legal action against the Chief Minister's decision.
The Tissamaharama local governing body has been controlled by the JVP since 2002 and is the only local council won by the party.
