May 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka Department of Motor Vehicles has decided to begin issuing number plates with three English letters for the newly registered vehicles soon.
This was were revealed when the new Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama visited the office of the Department of Motor Vehicles today.
Sri Lanka began using two English letters instead of the Sinhala auspicious letters 'Sri' amidst criticism in year 2000 and issued 188,925 such number plates to vehicles.
However, the Department of Motor Vehicles has now run out of letters and numbers. Production of number plates for three letter numbers have already begun and 1600 number plates a day are produced now, says the Department.
