* No tsunami threat to Sri Lanka from the Nicobar Island quake
Sun, Jun 13, 2010, 11:53 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jun 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka cancelled a tsunami alert it issued for its coastal areas in pre-dawn hours of Sunday following the strong quake with a magnitude of 7.5 that struck near India's Nicobar Islands.

Sri Lanka's National Disaster Management Centre issued a tsunami warning at around 2:00 a.m. for all the coastal areas and put the sleeping residents on alert.

However, the Centre an hour later said there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka from the earthquake.

A tsunami created by the 9.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern shores of Indonesia's Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004 left over 35,000 dead in Sri Lanka.
