July 01, Kiev: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is on a 5-day official visit to Ukraine at the invitation of his Ukranian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych participated in several engagements.
President Rajapaksa met Ukraine's Prime Minister Mykola Azarov at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kiev. The two leaders discussed a variety of issues pertinent to both countries.
Prime Minister Azarov has pledged to provide knowledge of space technology to Sri Lanka under a program similar to an exchange programme Ukraine has with Brazil. The two leaders discussed implementing a scholarship programme between the two countries.
The Sri Lankan President and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa along with their son Sub Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapaksa later visited the National University of Defense in Ukraine. The President addressed the gathering of military officers at the occasion.
President Rajapaksa is expected to visit several places of cultural values this afternoon. Meanwhile a Sri Lankan cultural display is now being showcased at the Ukraine House.
President Rajapaksa and Ukrainian President Yanukovych attended "Rajatha Dekma", a photographic exhibition by presidential photographer Sudath Silva held at the Chamber of Commerce in Kiev yesterday evening. Chairman of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce Skripchenko Sergey declared open the photo exhibition on Sri Lankan President.
Sri Lankan Ambassador in Russia Udayanga Weeratunga was also present at the occasion.
