May 05, Colombo: The Colombo Magistrate Court today released another suspect arrested on suspicion of conspiring with ex-Army Commander General (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka to topple the government of Sri Lanka on bail. The suspect was produced in court by Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Court released Major General Upali Edirisinghe was on a cash bail of Rs. 10,000 and a personal surety of Rs. 100,000. His passport was also held. The court ordered the suspect to appear before the CID every Sunday.
Major General Edirisinghe joined the service in 1973, served as G.O.C. of 11 division, as Security Forces Commander of Vanni and also as Regimental Commander.
A number of ex-Army officials who supported Sarath Fonseka in his presidential campaign were taken into custody by CID. Some of them were released on bail by courts.
Some other retired officers taken into custody included a few who had come from abroad.
