May 04, Colombo: A group of Sri Lanka university students led by the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna affiliated Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) clashed with the police in Colombo today.
The students marched from the Viharamahadevi Park and attempted to forcibly enter the Ministry of Health prompting the police to use minimal power to prevent them. Students said that one of their colleagues were injured and hospitalized.
Later the students proceeded towards the University Grants Commission.
The agitation was against the reduction of one year from the four-year degree course of health science designed to graduate students in the nursing, physiotherapist, laboratory technician, pharmacist and radiologist trades.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Gamini Samaranayake rejected a request from the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Nandimithra Ekanayaka to discuss with the Inter University Students' Federation. However, the Deputy Minister held discussions with the Inter University Students' Federation.
