May 03, Colombo: Construction of Sri Lanka's first ever well-equipped neurosurgery unit is almost completed now and the Ministry of Health is planning to open it ceremoniously at the end of this month.
Once opened the 300-bed super-specialty tertiary-care facility will be one of Asia's most advanced neurosurgical units constructed, with special focus on neurotrauma, neurology, and neurosurgery.
Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe has said that the Unit will be Asia's most sophisticated Neurosurgical Unit. It has all the facilities that can be found in a similar hospital in a developed country, he said.
The eight-storey, 175,000 square feet building constructed at a cost of 2.8 billion rupees is equipped with a roof-top helipad to provide air ambulance services.
The facility accommodates 6 ultra-modern Operation Theaters, 66 ICU beds (33 each for neurosurgery and neurotrauma), 43 HDU beds, 37 Spinal Ward beds, 53 Head Injury beds and 46 neurosurgery beds.
The unit is open for patients from anywhere in the country. A staff of 600 is expected to be employed at the facility. The government of Sri Lanka provides free health facilities for all Sri Lankans.
The project was partially funded through a US $ 4.89 million loan provided to the Sri Lankan Government by the Saudi Fund for Development.
