May 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Sunday called on the government to present a budget for 2010.
The JVP, which is the key constituent party of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by former Army Commander Retired General Sarath Fonseka, said it would put pressure on the government to present a budget through parliament.
The DNA currently has seven seats in parliament.
DNA Colombo District parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti told the media that the Vote-on-Account approved by Parliament for a period of four months ended on April 30 and the government without presenting a budget was now allocating funds to the ministries from the Treasury following a Presidential directive.
Handunnetti explained that according to the Constitution, the President could do so only when Parliament has been dissolved.
"Parliament does not stand dissolved today. It will meet this week. The powers over the country's public finances are vested with Parliament in terms of the Constitution. However, the President has now taken over this power to allocate money for the Ministries. We condemn this move," he said.
