Pro-UNP lawyers to discuss reforms and possible leadership change Sri Lanka opposition party

May 02, Colombo: The National Lawyers Association (NLA), lawyers affiliated with Sri Lanka's main opposition United National party (UNP), is to meet on May 7th to discuss and seek the opinions of lawyers island wide on proposals that have to be included in possible reforms for the party.
Several senior members of the NLA Saturday said that lawyers could propose reforms and even leadership changes.
Former Deputy Justice Minister and Senior NLA member, Attorney Mahen Gunasekara has said that once the proposals are gathered, the Association would present the proposals to Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
The date to meet with Wickremasinghe is to be decided on the 7th.
The NLA also said that certain sections within the Association were trying to create a wrong impression about it and that the NLA was only trying to call for a revamping of the party.
Gunasekara said the Association was only trying to push for reforms in the party in order to help the UNP become a winning force again.
He explained that the party needed to be revamped 'from top to bottom' and go on a democratic path.
"It is only then that the party membership would have the strength to work. At present, it is the party leader who makes appointments to the party according to his wishes and the party machinery does not work like that," Gunasekara has said.
