Sun, May 2, 2010, 09:38 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
May 02, Colombo: The report prepared on a presidential directive into the incidents that led to the Nawalapitiya re-poll and the possible involvement of governing party members in it has been handed over to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa following his return to the country from Bhutan.
President Rajapaksa had earlier informed the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Kandy District candidates that those found guilty over the Nawalapitiya election related incidents will not be given a portfolio in the government.
The President is now expected to make several new ministerial and deputy ministerial appointments this week.
The committee to report on the Nawalapitiya incident was chaired by Attorney-at-Law W. Karunajeeva and included lawyers Champani Padmasekara, Saliya Mathew, Chandra Fernando, and Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa.
Severe violations of election law by supporters of some ruling party members led the Election Commissioner to annul the results of April 8 general election at 37 election centers in Nawalapitiya polling division and call a re-poll which was held on April 20.
