49,000 widows in the war-affected Eastern Province of Sri Lanka

May 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Child and Women Development Tissa Karalliyadda points out that there are around 49,000 widows in Eastern Province that were affected by war.
The Minister said that out of them 25,000 are young women below 25 years of the age. Of them at least 12,000 have three or more children.
At a press conference held in the Ministry yesterday, the Minister said that the issue of these women and children would be focused by his Ministry and strengthening their mentality would be given priority.
Recently, the Chairman of the Association of Self-employed Women of India Uma Devi Swaminathan held a discussion with the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan and said that Indian government was ready to assist the widows of the Eastern Province.
According to the statistics of the Eastern Provincial Council sources, of the 45,644 widows that live in the Province, 5,054 lost their husbands due to war. District-wise distribution of widows in the Eastern Province is 2,213 in Batticaloa, 1,743 in Trincomalee, and 1,098 in Ampara.
