May 01, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has reportedly directed the country's Treasury to provide funds to the ministries to carry out their work following the lapse of the Vote-on-Account on Friday (30).
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his capacity as the Finance Minister, has reportedly instructed Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara to release funds to the ministries for the next three months.
Last November the parliament passed a Vote-on-Account to cover the first four months of expenditure in 2010 until April 30 as the government was planning to hold general elections before April.
The Constitution gives power to the President to allocate funds from the Treasury until a budget is presented.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva recently said the government is preparing a mini budget for the six months for the period from July to December this year and the 2011 budget is to be presented as usual in November.
Meanwhile, the newly elected government is scheduled to have its first parliamentary group meeting today (1) and the first Cabinet meeting on May 5.
