May 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition UNP has said that it would make a complaint to the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva about the continued detention of Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader and Colombo District parliamentarian, former Army Commander Retired General Sarath Fonseka.
Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has reportedly requested parliamentarian Jayalath Jayawardena to write to the Human Rights Committee of the IPU in Geneva about General Fonseka's case.
However, DNA parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said his party was not consulted about the matter and therefore did not know anything about the UNP's move.
According to Dissanayake, the DNA was making every effort to get General Fonseka released from military custody and the first step was to bring him to parliament.
General Fonseka was arrested on February 08 by the military police and has been detained at the Navy Headquarters since then. The former Army Commander is facing two military tribunals on charges of involvement in political activities while in active service and contravention of military procurement procedures.
