* President commissions the newly constructed Kekiriobada Reservoir in Southern Sri Lanka

Mar 31, Hambanthota: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today (31) opened the newly constructed Kekiriobada Reservoir in Kirama of Hambanthota District for operations.

The Kekiriobada multi-purpose irrigation project is implemented under the National Irrigation Plan in the Walasmulla Pradeshiya Sabha area of the Hambanthota district across the Kekiri Oya, a branch of the Kirama Oya, to provide irrigation facilities to the farmers in the area.

The Kekiriobada project conceived under the President's Mahinda Chinthana policy has built a dam over 30 metres in height and 800 feet in length to divert the Kekiri Oya to the new reservoir with a capacity of 2,200 acre-feet.

According to the irrigation Department, the project will benefit 3,437 farmer families providing potable water during drought and irrigating a large extent of paddy lands in Kirama, Walasmulla, Beliatta and Tangalle.

Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, candidates for Hambantota District Mahinda Amaraweera, Nirupama Rajapaksa, and V.K.Indika accompanied the President at the occasion.
