60,000 police officers deployed for Sri Lanka elections

Mar 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka police has taken measures to deploy nearly 60,000 police officers to maintain law and during the upcoming general election, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya said Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, the IGP said all arrangements have been finalized to provide security for the parliamentary polls throughout the country including in the North and East.
The police will also solicit assistance of 19,500 armed forces personnel to strengthen security in addition to the 58,700 police officers that will be deployed.
Balasuriya also requested the election candidates to remove all illegal propaganda material and offices within the 48 hours from April 4 early morning to April 5 midnight.
Meanwhile, the head of the police election desk DIG Gamini Navaratne said some rumors about computer frauds aimed at altering election results are already spreading. He requested the originators of those rumors not to undermine the police service which is trying its best to provide the security to all the people.
