Sri Lankan court grants permission for ex-military officer to make a statement in court

Mar 31, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court has permitted a former military officer who is contesting the April 8 general election under the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), led by Retired General Sarath Fonseka, to make a statement in court following a request made by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Colombo Additional Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara had delivered the order following submissions made by Counsel Sunil Watagala and Mervyn de Silva that the CID was repeatedly requesting Captain Sanjeewa Kandanarachchi to give statements to the CID.
Counsel Watagala informed court that DNA candidate Captain Kandanarachchi has already given three statements to the CID upon request and he was continuously being summoned to the CID to record various statements.
Counsel Watagala observed that Captain Kandanarachchi was prepared to make a statement in court.
Captain Kandanarachchi's matter was taken up during the inquiry into the finding of weapons and explosives at the Bodhiraja Temple in Maligawatte in Sri Lanka capital.
