Sri Lanka police chief wants illegal propaganda material removed by April 05

Mar 30, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police Chief (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya made another request to election candidates to remove all illegal propaganda material and offices within the 48 hours from April 4 early morning to April 5 midnight.
The police chief said that the candidates can have only one office April 5 onwards. However, this is the time the candidates should end election propaganda legally under the election laws. The general election is to be held on April 08.
Illegal propaganda campaigns by the candidates, some of them are responsible cabinet Ministers have become a nuisance to the public. Candidates from all parties have pasted posters almost all surfaces around main roads including public buildings and vehicles such as public buses. Media reported yesterday that a poster was being displayed on an official vehicle of an Assistant Election Commissioner as well.
Illegal propaganda material made of polythene and plastic cause severe environmental damage. In addition, illegal uses of sound systems cause noise pollution.
