Mar 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Election Commissioner Dayananda Dishanayake has ordered the police to ensure that all illegal propaganda materials being dispayed now for the forthcoming General Election are removed before April 4th.
The police has been advised of the Commissioner's directive during a meeting held at the Elections Secretariat last evening.
The Senior DIG in charge of Election Activities, Gamini Navaratne said that an extensive programme was in place to secure the removal all illegal propaganda material including cutouts, banners and posters across the country before April 4.
Election monitors have blamed the police for failing to remove the illegal cutouts, posters, and banners despite the Elections Chief’s order for their removal.
Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) spokesman Keerthi Tennekoon said the propaganda materials are still to be seen prominently displayed in Kegalle, Matale, Ratnapura, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and in nearly the whole of the Southern Province.
