Sat, Mar 27, 2010, 11:30 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 27, Colombo: Helitours, Sri Lanka's premier domestic flight service operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) is becoming a popular mode of transportation between the North and the South.

Helitours which resumed its operations on the 21st of July last year after the successful conclusion of the war completed its 200th flight last Wednesday (24). It has flown 2,669 passengers since it resumed the service.

The domestic flight was the only fast way to travel to and from Jaffna in the North before the main A9 Jaffna-Kandy highway was opened in last November.

Helitours offers scheduled flights to Palaly in Jaffna Peninsula and China Bay in Trincomalee in the East. The Flying time from Colombo to Palaly or China Bay is around 1 hour on either an Y12 or an An32 aircraft. The tours are flown by experienced pilots of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

The SLAF also provides "Helilifts" on reservations to any part of the country or to any offshore flat forms. Shore-to-ship operations are also carried out. Special arrangements can be made to transport patients.

All Helitours passengers are provided insurance for the complete duration of the flight.

The revenues generated by the domestic flight service are directed towards the development work in the country.
