* Sri Lanka government increases minimum monthly allowance for poverty concession recipients

Mar 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has decided to increase the minimum Samurdhi poverty relief allowance up to Rs. 1000 per month. The minimum Samurdhi allowance is just Rs. 175 now.

The government spends Rs. 798 million per month to provide Samurdhi allowance to 1.6 million poverty concession recipients, says the Minister of Media Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena. The government expects to provide this concession more to needy people in future, the Minister said addressing a press conference held in the Media Ministry.

The government has also decided to provide a special allowance to all families that have disabled members irrespective of the income of the family, the Minister said.

Further, 23,700 employees of Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority will be granted pensions, the Minister said.
