* Sri Lanka Supreme Court grants leave to proceed with journalist's FR petition
Thu, Mar 25, 2010, 05:53 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 25, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Supreme Court today (25) granted leave to proceed with the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by the arrested journalist Ruwan Weerakoon.

Weerakoon, a journalist close to the defeated presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka, is a regular defence correspondent to the Bottom Line and Nation newspapers and Asia Tribune website.

The case is to be taken up by the Supreme Court on July 7.

The petition states that Weerakoon was arrested by the TID while receiving treatment for a heart ailment at a private hospital.

The petition has also denied the allegation of Weerakoon's involvement in trying to topple the government.
