Mar 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Elections Secretariat has taken measures to add more counting centers for the upcoming parliamentary elections on April 8 to streamline the counting process.
The Secretariat will set up 1,130 counting centers in the 22 districts. A total of 7,620 candidates are vying for a spot in the 225-member parliament at the polls. Only 888 counting centers were set up for the presidential election held in January.
Election officials say more time would be needed to count the preferential votes at the parliamentary election and hence the decision to increase the number of counting centers and the number of officials for counting.
The Elections Secretariat will deploy 300,000 public sector employees for election duty in the forthcoming general election, 50,000 more than the number utilized for poll duties during the presidential election.
