Mar 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) has initiated a programme to set up a digital communication network for the Samurdhi poverty concession recipients.
ICTA says that this programme will facilitate uplifting the life conditions of the Samurdhi recipients through IT.
A center with information communication technology facilities will be established in the Samurdhi Authority under the programme, a spokesman of the ICTA said.
Samurdhi concession recipients can link with the center via Nenasala IT centers set up by the Ministry of Science and Technology regionally, ICTA says. They can send their feedback to the Samurdhi Authority through this link.
The support of around 100,000 Samurdhi recipients is expected in this programme. They are to be trained in this purpose, ICTA spokesman said.
In 2008, Sri Lanka state provided poverty concessions under Samurdhi programme for over 1.6 million people, according to data submitted by the Deputy Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya in the parliament on May 05 last year.
Internet usage of Sri Lankans is 1% as mentioned in a report released by the World Bank recently.
