Mar 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka police released all 16 persons arrested in suspicion of pelting stones at Maharaja Television and radio broadcasting company office in Colombo yesterday in protest of an upcoming concert by singer Akon.
The police released the persons on police surety without producing them in courts and the police spokesman Superintendant of Police Prishantha Jayakody said that the judiciary would be reported about them in due course.
A mob attacked the MTV/MBC head office at Braybrooke Place in Colombo yesterday evening damaging the office premises where news division of several popular television and radio channels including Sirasa TV were located.
Protesters were reportedly outraged at an upcoming concert by R&B singer Akon organized by the company. About 200 people suddenly gathered outside the office and pelted stones shattering the windows of the building. Several vehicles parked outside the building were also damaged and four workers received minor injuries. Placards left at the scene read, "Stop Akon's show."
The protesters appeared to be angry over Akon's video "Sexy Chick," which features scantily clad women dancing at a pool party with a Buddha statue visible in the background.
The TV Channel's studio complex at Pannipitiya came under a bomb-attack last year causing heavy damages. Reporters of the station were also attacked in the past few years.
